All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.
- Abraham Lincoln
How wonderful it would be if my son were to remember me in that way when he is older, but of course when we're young, no matter how much we love our mums, we can never appreciate all the things that mothers do for us. Now that I am a mother myself, I find myself looking back and realizing how much my mum gave to me and how incredibly hard she worked. If only we could give back as much. Perhaps every day should be Mother's Day. I hope you enjoy the free printable mothers day cards that I've created.

Mothers Day Facts
Mothers's Day is celebrated around the world with the majority of celebrations taking place on the 2nd Sunday in May. Notable exceptions include the UK where Mothering Sunday takes place on the 4th Sunday of Lent - the celebration was traditionally the day when people would visit their 'mother' church (the main church of the area) and this gradually became the occasion for family reunions and then for honouring mother.
Both the Greek and Roman civilizations made offerings to mother goddesses, the Greeks celebrated a spring festival dedicated to Rhea, wife of Cronus and mother of the Olympians whilst the Romans had a festival devoted to the Mother Goddess, Cybele, which also took place in early spring.
The Mother's Day that is now celebrated around the world owes its origins to an American, Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for a day to honour mothers in the early 20th Century. An earlier campaigner, Julia Ward Howe had sown the seed in 1870 by calling for an international Mother's Day celebrating peace and motherhood and funding celebrations of motherhood that took place on June 2nd. However, this celebration died out when the funding stopped. Anna Jarvis wished to fulfil her own mother's desire for a day to honour mothers and, due to her tireless campaigning, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the 2nd Sunday in May as Mother's Day in 1914.

Mothers Day Sayings and Dedications
Mom, today is your day.
There's no way I can ever thank you for all you've done for me, so I'll just say.....Mom, I love you, you're the world to me.
- Unknown
Mom, I want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all that you've done to help me grow. When I was young I didn't realize that I was the luckiest child in the world. Thank you for all the times you held me up when I was down and the times you cared for me when I was sick, but, most of all, for always, always being there for me.

To the world you might just be one person,
but to one person you might just be the world.

I remember my mother's prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life.
- Abraham Lincoln
All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.
- George Washington
Mother - that was the bank where we deposited all our hurts and worries.
- T. DeWitt Talmage
You don't really understand human nature unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round will wave at his parents every time around - and why his parents will always wave back.
- William D. Tammeus
When I was a child, my mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If you become a monk you'll end up as the pope.' Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.
- Pablo Picasso
Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.
- Dinah Craik
And on a lighter note.......
Children are a great comfort in your old age - and they help you reach it faster, too.
- Lionel Kauffman
All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his.
- Oscar Wilde

To My Mother
For all the times you gently picked me up,
When I fell down,
For all the times you tied my shoes
And tucked me into bed,
Or needed something
But put me first instead.
For everything we shared,
The dreams, the laughter,
And the tears,
I love you with a "Special Love"
That deepens every year.
- Unknown
Loving hands
Loving hands quickly reach
Each time she hears a cry
Lifting up to comfort
And kiss the tears all dry
Weary eyes refusing sleep
Stay the whole night through
Her child is sick and hurting
Her tender care is due
The many tasks all done in love
To make it through each day
Seem to go unnoticed
Till she is gone away
A Mother is that someone
With a mission from above
Imparting to her children
The image of God's love
- Sue Skeen
You Were There
You were there when we took our first steps,
And went unsteadily across the floor.
You pushed and prodded: encouraged and guided,
Until our steps took us out the door...
You worry now "Are they ok?"
Is there more you could have done?
As we walk the paths of our unknown
You wonder "Where have my children gone?"
Where we are is where you have led us,
With your special love you showed us a way,
To believe in ourselves and the decisions we make.
Taking on the challenge of life day-to-day.
And where we go you can be sure,
In spirit you shall never be alone.
For where you are is what matters most to us,
Because to us that will always be home...

Tribute to Mother
You painted no Madonnas
on chapel walls in Rome
But with a touch divine
you lived one in your home
You wrote no lofty poems
that critics counted art
But with a nobler vision
you lived them in your heart
You carved no shapeless marble
into some high soul design
But with a finer sculpture
you shaped this soul of mine
You built no great cathedrals
that centuries applaud
But with a grace exquisite
your life cathedraled God
Had I the gift of Raphael
or that of Michelangelo
Oh, what a rare Madonna
my mother's life would show
- Frances Johansan
What's a Mother Worth?
I humbly appraise my mother's worth,
It began with pain to give me birth,
Which triggered off a love so strong,
Blossoming into a life-long bond.
When needed, she was always there,
Someone I realised would always care.
And the older I got the more I knew,
A mother's love sincere and true.
Now as I watch Mum age in years,
I'm happy to help and ease her fears.
Privileged now to play my part,
As she did for me from the very start.
